IIS Authentication and Windows NT

IIS can be configured to use your Windows NT security settings to allow website visitors authenticated access to your resources. To do this, in the IIS Control Panel, you need to edit access and authentication control options:

IIS Authentication Settings

You need to uncheckAnonymous access” option and you need to enable “Basic Authentication” option. This will make the IIS Server to ask the browser to send authentication userid and password in the http headers. [Note that unless you use SSL, the userid and password is sent in clear text (Base 64 encoded) over the network.]
